Have you ever wondered what heaven would be like? For me, it would be a German beer garden, drinking Kolsch and eating huge pretzels. This is an experience, that feels soooo good, it transcends pleasure. And this beer garden is the best I’ve ever visited; the warm, gentle breezes, the pretty waitresses that let me run a seemingly endless tab; I could stay here forever.
But the day didn’t start out like that. I had just arrived in Bonn, Germany, after spending two months in London, England.
London’s a great place to visit, with loads of museums and galleries, but the traffic is crazy. They don’t drive on the right side of the road. It’s so easy to get wiped out by a car if you try crossing the street in a hurry. You need to look to your right before stepping off the curb, not like Canada and Europe, where you look left.
I learned this the hard way when I almost got wiped out on my first day there. The honking of the horn and the dirty looks from the driver taught me a hard lesson. After that, I always to looked to my right. It became a reflex, an ingrained habit.
As fun as London was, though, I was really looking forward to visiting Bonn, the birthplace of Beethoven, and of course, enjoying their famous beer garden in the park. I took the subway from the train station, as soon as I arrived, and I got out across the street from the park.
Unfortunately, I’m such a creature of habit. As I started to cross the busy strasse to get to the beer garden, I looked to my right.
Boy, they drive fast in Germany, and the car horns are so loud. Luckily the car only scared me momentarily.
And now that I’m here, not only am I enjoying the great beer and pretzels, but my bladder seems to hold an endless amount of beer. This is paradise, I could easily stay here forever.
